Canal Cobia!

You just never know what you’re going to see swimming around in the Florida Keys.

This evening my neighbor (with my assistance), caught a 34-pound cobia–in our canal!

It all started while he and his wife were snapper fishing and they noticed two very large, and very mean looking bull sharks swimming around.

Bull sharks are not uncommon in the canals, especially this time of year, however you usually spot them hanging out around the marinas and fishing boats and where there is some current flow– not at my dock in Key Colony Beach.

While looking at the bulls we noticed a nice cobia following them and my neighbor pitched a frozen sardine to it. Minutes later we were on the boat chasing him down.

The end result: a 34 pound cobia! Caught in the 4th Street canal in Key Colony Beach!

It’s starting to wonder if the fish are following the fishermen? Maybe they’re bored since the tourists aren’t here and there just aren’t that many people out fishing. Who knows…
